Buffalo River Trail Crew

History

Jim Liles, as Assistant Superintendent of Buffalo National River (Aug 1983 – Aug 1998), was instrumental in the development of the trails in BNR. He has graciously written this history of the project for us.

Ken Smith (author of Buffalo River Handbook, The Buffalo River Country, Sawmill, and others) and his crew of countless volunteers handled much of the BRT construction work, beginning in 1986.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Buffalo National River in 2022, the University of Arkansas developed a website of interactive histories, recorded events, collections, and oral histories.

In early 2025, U of Ark Pryor Center made available a collection of video and audio interviews with Ken.
