Buffalo River Trail Crew

Fall ’23 Summary

The Fall ’23 work session for Ken’s Krew has been completed and was a great success. We had 12 volunteers in all, including 6 first-timers, and logged 291 hours. Rather than focusing on tread rehabilitation as first planned, we turned to simply getting the trail opened up – clearing a large amount of downfall from almost 14 miles of trail stretching from the Boxley trail head down-river just past Steel Creek and short segments on either side of Kyle’s Landing. We did a heck of a lot of good for the BRT and the people using it.

There remains a 1/2-mile segment with a lot of briars that overwhelmed our loppers and will be best addressed with some sort of motorized tools. Expect the announcement of a follow-up 1-day trip before the end of the year.

As usual, the fall color was great. The weather was cooperative with just a couple brief showers on our last day. Using the ranch house at Steel Creek was a big benefit. Having a full kitchen allowed Chef Gary to do things like chicken thighs in a wine reduction with a bit of rosemary, accompanied by roasted potatoes. Pretty yummy! I hope to continue using the ranch house as we work our way downstream.
